I create hand-built clay works using terra cotta, a material that recalls the red earth of Ghana. These sculptures explore mythological figures, particularly within an ongoing series on Mmoatia – The Helper. The works engage with ancestral knowledge systems, including herbal healing practices, food culture, and relational approaches to land and ecology.

My paintings depict scenes from my daily life, transforming lived moments into earth-based, colourful visual narratives. I work with self-made pigments derived from natural materials sourced from my immediate environment, allowing the material origins of the work to remain present and visible.

I work with collage as a language of multiplicity and assemblage, bringing together fragments to form new wholes. Using found materials from books, postcards, and magazines, alongside hand-painted elements, photography, and digital sources, my collages mirror lived existence as layered, relational, and made up of many coexisting realities within a single image.

Merci Ewuresi, is a multidisciplinary visual artist and researcher of Austrian and Ghanaian descent. Her practice spans clay works, painting, collage, and digital exploration, with a strong focus on material experimentation and emerging technologies. Since 2023, she has been producing natural pigments from locally sourced materials, grounding her process in environmental awareness and sustainability.
Her work is informed by African feminist thought, decoloniality, and the politics of representation. Themes of womanhood, cultural heritage, and diasporic connectivity are central to her practice, where personal memory intersects with collective history. Her work has been exhibited in Accra, Vienna, Amsterdam, and Berlin.
Alongside her independent practice, Merci is co-founder of Ɔkyena, a collective dedicated to digitally archiving and reimagining African cultural objects, tools, and narratives through 3D technologies, extending her exploration of representation into digital futures. Her practice affirms complexity, resilience, and imagination across analogue and digital forms.
